Our History

Our History: The Journey of Maypole F.C.
Maypole F.C. began its journey at the Maypole Youth Centre on Idminston Croft, where we first started offering association football for boys of all ages. In our early days, we joined the Central Warwickshire League with just three teams. Home games were played at Silver Street in Wythall, while training sessions took place at Daisy Farm Park. Much like today, our operations were made possible through player subscriptions, small grants, and community fundraising.
In 1978, we took a major step forward by forming our first open-age team, made up of players who had come through the ranks over the previous three years. This team quickly found success, rising through the divisions—from Division 7 all the way to the Premier League.
Two years later, in 1980, we introduced a standard club kit: red and black striped shirts, black shorts, and black or red socks. This iconic look remains part of our identity today.
By 1987, after years of dedicated fundraising and securing small grants, we achieved another milestone: purchasing our own clubhouse and securing the lease of the old Rover ground on Greenaleigh Road—our home ground to this day.
As the club continued to grow, so did our success on and off the pitch. In 1988, we established Maypole United, allowing us to field two teams in the same age group. Since then, we’ve expanded to include Maypole Lions, Maypole Juniors, and more recently, Maypole Colts, reflecting the ever-growing number of teams and players under the Maypole F.C. banner.
Notable Names
Throughout Maypole’s history there have been a great number of people who have contributed towards the clubs continued success, especially the following:
• Ben Onions
• Bob Devey
• George McGahey
• Jim Penn
• Stan Baldwin
• John Lockley
There had also been a truly outstanding contribution from Hazel & Mick McGahey who were dedicated to the club from the very beginning and without their immense time and effort, Maypole FC would not be where it is today.
In February 2009 Sir Trevor David Brooking, CBE a former England international footballer and manager awarded Maypole FC their prestigious Charter Standard Community Club Award. This is an exclusive group of leading community football clubs working in partnership with Nike and The FA to raise standards in grassroots football.
What We’re Doing Now
With over 40 years of football experience, Maypole F.C. continues to grow and thrive. We currently field two to three teams in most age groups, from Under-7s to Under-16s, offering young players regular opportunities to develop and compete.
Our teams play weekly in the Central Warwickshire Youth Football League (CWYFL), maintaining our strong presence in grassroots football. More recently, we’ve expanded by launching a new team competing in the Midland Junior Premier League (MJPL)—a FA Charter Standard League, offering a higher level of competition and development.
